My brain is still having trouble processing how this day unfolded. We almost missed each other. If she hadn’t been crossing when we came through, she would have gone to the farm. I almost fucking missed her. Seeing Ivy running down the middle of the highway sent me over the edge, especially with Vance running after her. Mr. Johnny and I thought the worst. When she came barreling into my arms, it was like the whole world stopped, and for a second it was just the two of us. A miracle; it was a fucking miracle.

Her hand rests on my shoulder, and I want nothing more than to curl her up in my lap and hold on to her and never let go. I don’t know if I should feel jealous that she’s been traveling with some man this entire time, but I don’t. He got her back to me, in one piece. There was no doubt that she was still mine when she saw the Jeep. It never occurred to her that somebody may have stolen it.

Mr. Johnny glances at me. He is thinking the same thing. I’m going to take this win today because God knows we have faced enough loss. I need some time just holding her and being with her. This traveling is not how I want to spend these first hours back together.

We have been traveling our original route for a while, and the map shows the service road that we intended to camp out on before trekking through the woods to Bear’s camp. All the girls are asleep, and Mr. Johnny and I spent a good deal of time trying to figure out a plan of action. What we needed to do and how. We are losing daylight by the second as we turn onto the service road. As soon as we get a mile or so down, it turns to gravel and Mr. Johnny gasses it.

The racket of the tin-covered Jeep flying down the gravel road wakes the girls, and Ivy pokes her head between the front seats. She looks picture-perfect, but I bet like hell she would appreciate some hot food and a hot shower. Luckily for her, I know just where to get it.

“What’s the plan?” Her eyes are bright, and she looks ready to take on anything.

“Well, Silas made a friend with a farm set up off in the woods. Our initial plan was to stay there and use it as home base to look for you. Now it looks like we can’t set down stakes. We are gonna drive this service road to the end and then walk through the woods to Bear’s place. We planned on sleeping in the Jeep and in tents tonight, but I think you girls need a good night’s sleep. The next few days are going to be really hard.” Mr. Johnny never lets off the gas and remains in perfect control of the old Jeep speeding down the road.

“We will leave sometime tomorrow after we have time to sit and map out where we should go and places we should avoid.
